Gravesham 3 West Kent 0 (Scorers: OG, Love, Mackley)
Old Southfields Playing Field, Nursery Mews off of Cedar Avenue DA12 5JT 10.00am kick off
The first game of the season for Gravesham Under 12’s started off at a fast tempo, with both teams enjoying a fair share of possession. West Kent's skilful wingers provided an early threat to Gravesham’s defence. However, after absorbing the pressure it was Gravesham who found the back of the net first following Frankie Love's tricky run down the wing and cut back being deflected off a defender for an own goal, making the score 1-0. West Kent had a spell of chances as they pushed for an equaliser, with a lot of shots from outside the box, but they didn’t seem to trouble Gravesham’s keeper Dominic Pamphlett. It was Gravesham’s Cameron Martins who had the best chance in the first half, when Jensen Cooper's clever reverse ball found the striker who’s shot was blocked bravely by a West Kent defender. As the first half was drawn to a close by the referee, the score was 1-0 to Gravesham. Half-time saw the introduction of striker Noah Mackley, who’s presence disturbed the West Kent defence. It was Noah’s hold up play which found winger Leo Allen who cleverly tipped toed past a West Kent defender and played an effortless through ball into Noah’s path who first time shot swept past the keeper and into the bottom right corner putting Gravesham district 2-0 up. West Kent's best chances came through set pieces, with the away side coming close with a header which just whispered past the Gravesham post, and a dangerous free-kick which took a nick off the wall resulting in a corner. However West Kent's chances were limited by excellent defensive performances from Gravesham’s Teddy Hunt and Freddie Berwick, who’s defensive standards didn’t drop the whole game. Gravesham then made it 3-0, when midfielder Brodie Colcombe darted forward and found the feet of Cameron Martins who beat his man and drove forward into the West Kent box until a covering West Kent fullback intercepted him, which ricocheted the ball into the path of Gravesham winger Frankie Love who’s right footed first time curling effort found the bottom corner. A West Kent freekick was awarded in a dangerous position late on in the second half, however the effort was placed straight into the Gravesham wall denying any chance of a late consolation goal. Not long after that, the referee blew the whistle on the first game of the season ending the game with the final score being Gravesham three, West Kent nil.

West Kent, however, were not to be underestimated and fought back hard, putting the Gravesham defense under pressure. But Gravesham's goalkeeper, Dominic Pamphlett (on for Ernie Rutledge), was on top form and made some fantastic saves to keep his team in the lead. But it was Gravesham who finally sealed the victory, when the goalkeeper Dom e up for a free kick and scored an incredible goal from just inside the West Kent half. This was a real moment of glory for the young goalkeeper, and the expression on his face showed how much it meant to him.
The final whistle blew and Gravesham U12 emerged victorious, lifting the Holy Cross Trophy to the delight of their supporters. It was a game which showed why these district finals are special, every player on the pitch put in 110% and gave the spectators a fast paced and thrilling game.
