Gravesham Schools' Football Association U14s 2012 / 13
KENT CUP
The team entered this competition which was organised on a league basis with the top two teams qualifying for the semi-finals of the Presidents Shield.
Saturday 3rd November Kent Cup
Gravesham 1 Maidstone 4 (Scorer: Uings)
This was Gravesham U14’s first game in the President’s shield and the final score line did not reflect the performance of the boys. Gravesham were fastest out of the blocks putting Maidstone under pressure and were unlucky not to be 2-0 up after 15 minutes with efforts from Mitchell Uings and Joe Neal. However, a hopeful ball forward from Maidstone saw their striker through on goal and calmly slot pass Tony Coxall in the Gravesham goal for 1-0. In a matter of minutes Gravesham were 2-0 down with a fantastic headed goal from a corner. Maidstone’s pressure did not stop there making it 3-0 before half time with another through ball finding Maidstone’s striker in acres of space to round Tony and pass into an empty net.
Maidstone come out in 2nd half and started exactly where they had left off in the 1st with another good finish to make the score 4-0. Gravesham rallied to make it 4-1 after a mistake from the Maidstone GK and a tidy finish from Mitchell Uings. Gravesham were unlucky not to add to the score as the Maidstone GK made some excellent saves. Gravesham were left to rue missed opportunities and unlucky to be on the end of a score that flattered their opponents. All the players can be pleased with their effort and commitment to the cause and with more games and hard work on the training ground results will come their way.
Saturday 9th February Kent Cup
Gravesham 4 Swale 1 (Scorers: Uings(3 - 1 penalty), Rosenfield)
In our first match since December a strong and talented Gravesham side played host to a well prepared and competitive Swale team at Fleet Leisure Sports Club.
With Jake Banks pulling up with an injury in the warm up, Gravesham were forced into an early change with Dale Sutherland joining Beau Driscoll in midfield to add a creative touch to our 4-4-1-1 formation.
Playing against the hill in the first half, Gravesham were always going to spend a great deal of the period defending with the Swale forwards always looking dangerous.
For all Swale’s possession and positive running they could not break our defensive line which was excellently marshalled by Captain Sam Fairweather-Oates.
With the score at 0-0 at half time, we made a few changes introducing Arjun Heer into the defence, pushing Oliver Freeman into midfield. Oliver had an excellent debut overall.
Just after half time and against the run of play Swale took the lead with a well taken chip from the edge of the box. Although 0-1 down Gravesham always looked capable of getting back into the game.
With Luca Franco also introduced at Half time Gravesham seemed to find more time on the ball and passes were finding their way through to our dangerous striking duo of Mitchell Uings and Liam Rosenfield, and it was Liam who opened our account with a fine run and finish. From the moment our first goal hit the back of the net, we didn’t look back with some fantastic passing movements creating numerous chances. Our second goal came from the industry and skill of man of the match Mitchell who’s persistence led to Liam being fouled in the box for a penalty. Mitchell despatched the penalty clinically to give us the lead. Soon after the penalty Mitchell added his second and third goal with some sharp shooting.
Gravesham continued to dominate until the end of the game and we created many more chances but credit to Swale who showed great endeavour to keep the final score line to 4-1.
All the lads can be very proud of their performance and they should also be proud of their parents for braving the exceptionally cold weather.
