Canterbury 2 Gravesham 1 (Scorer: Vine)
After a promising first match in the Presidents' Shield competition Gravesham were confident and looking forward to another test.
The game started very even and throughout the game stayed the same. There wasn’t a lot to split the teams and it was a pleasure to watch two teams go out and attempt to play football the right way. Canterbury opened the scoring with a shot from outside the area, Gravesham didn’t press quick enough and the shot flew through the crowd of defenders, Goalkeeper Jed Campbell got a hand to it but just couldn’t get enough on a venomous shot. Gravesham continued to work hard and made some good chances but nothing was falling for us. Canterbury led 1-0 at half time.
After the break, and going downhill, Gravesham looked dangerous and the continued pressure finally payed off when a quick free kick from Ryan Gill was played over the top of the defenders for Jack Vine to run onto and just nip in front of the goalkeeper to prod home and equalise. Gravesham looked dangerous throughout the half but couldn’t find another goal. Canterbury then regained the lead half way through the second half, with a ball slipped through the Gravesham defence and finished neatly. Again Gravesham did not give up, with many chances and shots from outside the area but couldn’t find a second goal. The game finished 2-1 to Canterbury which Gravesham felt was undeserved, but character and commitment could not be faulted from the boys and the look forward to the next test!

Saturday 3rd November, 2018. First Round
Brighton 3 Gravesham 2 (Scorers: Vine, Mangera)
Rottingdean Football & Cricket Club, Falmer Road, Rottingdean, East Sussex, BN2 7DA 11.30 kick off
Gravesham U14s had a tough fixture for their second game of our season: along way to travel and a nightmare memory of a heavy defeat last season.
Gravesham started brightly making some good interchanges but, against a top side, struggled to get out of their own half. Gravesham had one very good chance; a whipped ball in from Jack Vine found Jayden Boulton who unfortunately strayed offside and put his header over the bar. The constant Brighton pressure was proving tough to handle and just before the break Brighton went ahead to a scrappy goal when Gravesham couldn't clear and ended up putting the ball into their own net off a bobbled attempt to clear.
After the break changing formation helped the visitors who looked more threatening with two upfront. However, Brighton continued to look dangerous and doubled their lead not long after the break. Gravesham never gave up and were a testament to what they stand for as a team. Their constant never die attitude payed off when a deep free kick found its way to the back post to be prodded home by Harun Mangera to get them back in the game. A few minutes later, from a similar position, another free kick this time low and to the front post was sublimely volleyed towards the goal and in from Jack Vine to make the score 2-2. Unfortunately from the centre Brighton scored to make it 3-2 with no time for us to come back again.
Gravesham were superb and showed how much they have improved with this result against a difficult team. Well done to the boys who are looking forward to the next game to test themselves again.
